Hi Im new here and I need help deciding the best solvents for my tlc chromatography exp. I know that the polarity of the solvent and solute affect it but Im just unsure about which solvents to choose. I have a choice of three solvents. Hexane, acetone, and methylene chloride. I have three mixtures and each one uses one of the solvents I just mentioned. THe first mixture is 2-phenylethanol and acetophenone. The second mixture is 4-bromobenzene and p-xylene. The last mixture is benzoic acid, 2, 4-dinitrobenzoic acid, and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzoic acid. Im predicting methylene chloride for the first mixture, hexane for the second and acetone for the third. I tried to base my answers off the polarity of the mixtures. Can anyone tell me if I am on the right track

Do the experiment! One of the nice things about TLC is that experiments are easy to run in parallel. Why don't you run three plates (one in each solvent) with each plate spotted with each mixture. That will quickly confirm or deny your hypothesis.

Hello! I am also new here. I guess I will try this so see how this comes off.

Thanks and God bless,
