Multiple processing methods in Empower 2, one Report Method

Hello all,

I am new to the group, so be gentle on me! I would like to say first that I am impressed by the knowledge base on this forum. I am thrilled to use it and hopefully be able to contribute, too.

Ok heres my problem. Our QC lab just got Empower 2, yet it isn't set up yet. I just went to a Super-user training course and forgot to ask an important question: Can we set up multiple processing methods in a sample set to process our data and use one Report Method?
We run a lot of SEC and WCX, none of which requires a calibration curve to be generated (its all Area %) and injections within the same sequence cannot be integrated using one processing method, since some samples are highly stressed (accelerated stability) and will not integrate similarly. I am sure I can set up multiple Method Sets, which will have the same Instrument Method and different Processing Methods associated, but how to get them to display in a Report properly? I guess I am asking because it seems the report chromatogram scale is set to one specific view, right? (user defined, or 1st, 2nd largest peak..etc). I will have some injections that will require a different scale, but just want to have one report, not multiple reports.
Am I missing something here?

Short answer is yes. How to do it depends on your workflow.

As you should know a method set can optionally consist of an instrument method, processing method, report method and an export method. all of those are separate reusable methods and each line of a sample set can use the same or different method set.

To do it in an automated fashion you could create method sets for each different processing method with the same or different report methods.

Of course since results are saved you can apply any report method to any results or group of results that you select manually to generate report(s) as well.

Hi Brockboy02,
Hope the Empower preparation is going well!

As already mentioned you can specify a different method set for each line of a sample set, and different processing methods can be specified within the different method sets – and this will overcome the first part of your question. If needed, you could also use multiple processing methods for the same line of your sample set. By extracting a [duplicate] channel in the method set you can then specify a second processing method for this extracted duplicate channel.

For the report, one way is to add different chromatograms into the report method for each of the different scales/views you require. Then use data filtering conditions to select the data to be displayed in each chromatogram views. For example, add two chromatograms one at 1% scale and one at autoscale into the report method. Use the data filtering condition Label = S1* for Chromatogram set to say 1% scale and then use the data filtering condition Label = S2* for Chromatogram set to autoscale.

To set the data filtering, right click the chromatogram in publisher and select chromatogram properties >choose the order by tab, the click the data filtering button – just as you would do for table data.
There is on small problem, I think that the “empty” chromatogram may return the error line at the end of the report that there is no data for a chromatogram...

Does this help at all? Let me know if you have any more questions
Cheers, Ben

Hello Everyone:

Where can I find information about how to use Empower2 to build a processing method so that I can apply it to a method set. I need to learn how to use the software so any beginners help would be useful.

Waters usually provide an Empower tutorial CD which takes you through the method building process.
