I am trying to run a 5890 II Plus with a somewhat older version of Chemstation. First I tried with C.00.00 but I could not get the computer to recognize the GC, now I want to try wit A.03.00 but I am not sure how to configure the GC to talk to my computer.

Does anyone know about a "guide" or something of the like that would take me through setting up the 5890 with one of these chemstations?

We run 5890 GCs with A.06 to A.09, using Windows 95, NT4, and Windows 2000. Which GPIB board does your computer have inside? You'll use Configuration Editor to enter the select code for the older 82335 (typically 7) and for the GC and autosampler (typically 15 and 8, respectively).

82341 and 82350 GPIB boards need to be configured differently. 82335 boards are not compatible with the newer computers and/or newer versions of Windows, like NT and Windows 2000, I believe.

You'll also need GPIB cabling from the computer to the GC, and to the autosampler.

There are issues with the GC Chemstation software - it is quirky, to be kind. You're much better off using the GC-MS software (G1701AA) and just de-select the MS.

The software runs and acquires just fine under Windows 98SE (avoid 95 like the plague) and under Win2000. You'll need an ISA interface card - either one of the 82341 or 82350 will work. You'll need to know what the bus address of the interface card in the GC is - they come from the factory preset to 15, and I don't know many people who ever change them. The default address for the ISA HPIB card is 7, and you want to leave that alone.

If you're using an autosampler it will need to have an HP-IB board installed; otherwise, you'll need to bridge the HP-IL through a HP-IL to HP-IB converter. They're a pain in the butt - you're much better off buying the HP-IB board!

I have a similar problem with gc chemstation A.06.01,upon installing the software. I can get as are as the hp configuration editor and everything stops. I get a message saying no instrument configuration files were found. I have tried redoing the install and still can not get the to configuring the 5890 II plus gc. Any ideas I can try?

You did enter-in the license number and G-number for GC ChemStation, right?

Is it possible to find on the 5890gc seriesII a relay that can be used to trigger an external device synced with the injection from a gas switched valve?

Use the remote pin outs on the upper right hand side of the GC. This gives you a start out using pins 8 and 4. This should start an external device looking for a contact closure.

Thanks AICMM for the information. Once I find these pin outs, what command do I use to trigger the signal and what is the output? Can I use it to duplicate a sample injection?
