Hexane and Agilent 1946d MS

I just had a 1946d Agilent MS installed with an 1100 pump system and DAD detector. When I ran a sample through the column with hexane/IPA as the solvent I got a response on the DAD but the MS was quiet, too quiet.

I'm wondering if maybe hexane doesn't work as a solvent for the MS?

It's not a particularly good choice for electrospray, but what's the sample/analyte?
Here's a useful link on hexane in electrospray: http://web.uvic.ca/~mcindoe/42.pdf

The analyte is chloromethyl furfural, ethyl furoate ester, and some other unknown compounds. We had initially decided to use hexane as a "weak" solvent, as our analytes are more on the polar side. Do you have any suggestions for a good nonpolar solvent for electrospray?
