FID on the Varian 430GC

Hi all,

I have been asked to try to get a Varian 430GC up and running and after much consternation, I have finally got the IP addresses assigned between computer and GC. This system is using Galaxie software for data acquisition...which is another headache. But first, there is an error on the GC itself which said that the FID had a flame out. I see no way to restart the FID manually and all the gases seem to be in the right flow flow...25 mls/min for N2 makeup gas, 30 mls for H2, and 300 for air. Does anybody have any experience with this and could give me some guidance?

Second, the Galaxie software configuration manager shows all the information from the GC but when I run the Galaxie data acquisition software, I see nothing and cannot even get a method running since the software sees no actual GC.

The agilent chemstation software is so much easier to use.

Any help on either of these issues would be much appreciated.

Does it try to light and trip out ? Flame out value set too high.

Thanks, CE, for your quick response.

Yes, it does. It lights then flames out. I at least found out how to re-ignite it but every time I do, after a few minutes, it flames out again. I didn't see any access to a flame-out value but if you give me an indication of what I should be looking for, I can check it out.

Problem resolved. The flame tip ferrule was cracked. Replaced the ferrule and all was fine.

We have a 430 but with TCD. We have to unplug the wireless adapter that links the PC to the lab network if we reboot the PC and GC, as the subnetting isn't set up properly and the bootp listener then picks up the lab router instead of the GC. Once bootp has found the GC then the wireless can be plugged back in, it's just a start-up issue. So maybe try simplifying your connections until it all works, if you haven't already.

Thanks Johnny for your reply. It turns out after I replaced the ferrule that communication issues were also a problem. Resolved it by getting my computer guy to make me an Windows XP, SP2 machine. Have to reboot the PC with the GC but could keep cables connected. Had to make sure a cross-over cable not a patch cable was used as well.

So far, so good.
