Chemstation version for HP5890 II / 5971 MSD?

Can anyone recommend a Chemstation version for a HP5890 II w/5971 MSD GC?

I know G1701DA support GC/MSD but on the spec sheet is says it supports the 5973 MSD. Would it be safe to assume its backways compatible with the 5971?. I also see some folks post something about a SmartCard, will I need this?

From what I've found it looks like Im limited to 16-bit OS like Win 95 or 98, though would prefer something like XP (32-bit)

Thanks

Looks like Version B is the latest to support 5971 native, if you upgrade the motherboard to a 5972 then you could probably use Version C.

Version A was supported under Windows 3.11 and Windows 95, Version B and C are supported on Windows NT4.0 up to SP6a with the latest version.

Version B will support the 5890GC but you would need to use a 6890GC if you go to Version C. The SCII (smart card 2) was in the later models, the early models came with the SCI (smart card 1). From the chart the SCII+ came in the last models of the 5970, but I know I was able to take a SCII+ from an old 5970 and use it in a 5971.

There were some tricks to get the 5971 to work on newer software but most involved making it appear to be a 5972 or some editing of ini files but I don't remember what those were. If you are running a 5971/5890 combination you are stuck with needing a Windows95 or WindowsNT 4.0 PC and if lucky you can make it work with a PCI slot GPIB card, but many of the cards that shipped with the instruments were for ISA slots in the control computer. We had to replace our last few 5890s a few years ago simply because our WindowsNT computers were on their last legs.

If it weren't for forced obsolescence Agilent would sell very few new instruments because we would all still be using the old ones :)

Interestingly, the 5970/5890 I've been rehabbing is controlled by a PC running W2000 Pro, 5.00.2195. Software is G1710BA, B.01.00.

G1701BA is the last Chemstation MSD that supports the 5890 GC. It runs under Windows 2000 SP4. I use it to run my 5890-FID along with HP IOLibs H version.

I think I actually did run one copy on W2000, but I had to do something odd to get it to install. I think it wouldn't create the shortcuts to launch the program or something.

There is a SP2 that you have to install for chemstation. It is a free download. Otherwise I had no trouble other than finding an IOlibs version that worked (H) and figuring out the GC HPIB address.

I just run it on that computer then thumbdrive the data over to my office PC which has Chemstation E 02 on Win 7. I can analyze GC/MS data, 5890-FID data and even CE-DAD data on it.

You can also get a USB -to- GPIB adapter from Agilent to work with newer computers.

Wow- I had no idea.

I could literally run an HP 5970 on a computer running XP and higher with one of these?

If you can get a version of the software that supports the hardware to run on XP or W7 then it could be possible. If the chemstation version doesn't support the 5970 though, it won't be able to control the electronics.

Maybe do-able with Compatibility Mode....? Great- another project.
