My lab has one, and from what I hear, it is better than Perkin Elmers, but from what I see it goes down a lot. I don't use it, but I see the havoc. If you decide to get one, then by all means get the service contract it will probably save you money in the long run, but it seems that when thermo's people come in a "fix" it, they do a patch job that holds together for a bit and then they have to come back and repair it again. Honestly I haven't got much faith in the their service people, but maybe we just got the bad apple for the region.

Our ICP/MS is Perkin Elmer, so I can’t comment on the Thermo model. I can tell you that all of my experience with Thermo (3 separate LC/MS systems) has not been good. The instruments were always having electronic problems and problems with PC/instrument communications. Granted these things are common with LC/MS systems, but the Thermo instruments seemed to have more problems than other brands of LC/MS systems that I have encountered. Put this together with poor customer service, and you get a $250,000 piece of garbage. My advice, get another PE or possibly Varian.
